Peatland water conservation by agroforestry system

چکیده

Peat swamp forest have a high economic value and are potential for agricultural development. However, peatlad fragile ecosystems because they easily damaged difficult to restore. The main problem of all peat soil types is their irreversible drying. In this condition the easy burning, unable store water, if groundwater far from surface, plants will be stressed lack water. Therefore support sustainable development on peatlands it requires careful planning, application appropriate technology suitable management. One land management systems that can applied combining crop plant (agroforestry). Forest seasonal agriculture crops increase CO2 absorption so photosynthetic efficiency oxygen production increase. These proses biomass which maintain organic matter prevent erosion. Organic enhance effectiveness rewetting water retention capacity. addition, system also affects microclimate, such as becoming more humid gets shade vegetation above it, reduce temperature elevated air moisture. Indirectly, agroforestry excessive evaporation maintains ground level, especially during dry season. This review aim explain role intercropping in peatland conservation.

Valuing Soil Conservation Benefits of Agroforestry Practices

Although advocates of agroforestry have promoted soil conservation as one of its primary benefits, empirical estimates of these benefits have been lacking due to temporal and spatial complexity of agroforestry systems and soil resource dynamics. This study aims to reduce this gap by designing and testing a three stage farm level productivity methodology for economic evaluation of soil conservat...

Managing peatland vegetation for drinking water treatment

Peatland ecosystem services include drinking water provision, flood mitigation, habitat provision and carbon sequestration. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal is a key treatment process for the supply of potable water downstream from peat-dominated catchments. A transition from peat-forming Sphagnum moss to vascular plants has been observed in peatlands degraded by (a) land management, (b) ...

Indexing Soil Conservation: Farmer Perceptions of Agroforestry Benefits

Soil erosion poses economic and environmental concerns in many tropical uplands. Agroforestry has been proposed as a sustainable land use that can mitigate soil erosion and promote the economic welfare of small farmers. To evaluate such claims, we must (a) develop a composite measure of effectiveness, such as a soil conservation index, and (b) define it in terms understood by the farmers who ul...

Agroforestry Adoption By Smallholders

Agroforestry is a joint forest production system whereby land, labor, and capital inputs are combined to produce trees and agricultural crops (and/or livestock) on the same unit of land. Although existing for centuries (maybe millennia) as an array of traditional land use practices in the tropics, agroforestry emerged in the late 1970s as a modern, improved tropical land use system suitable for...

Below-ground interspecific competition for water in a rubber agroforestry system may enhance water utilization in plants

Rubber-based (Hevea brasiliensis) agroforestry systems are regarded as the best way to improve the sustainability of rubber monocultures, but few reports have examined water use in such systems. Accordingly, we tested whether interplanting facilitates water utilization of rubber trees using stable isotope (δD, δ(18)O, and δ(13)C) methods and by measuring soil water content (SWC), shoot potentia...
